Summer in Niseko 2018

 Learn and Communicate in English

Learn amidst the natural beauty of NISEKO!

Created by members of our experienced Hokkaido International School staff, participants receive the best possible instruction from highly qualified teachers, supported by a dedicated summer staff that place students first.

Taught in English, this program provides students from around Asia with the opportunity to experience independent and creative thinking skills alongside outdoor physical education activities.

This school is aimed for children of Western and Asian education systems who wish to come to Niseko to enjoy the beautiful setting, study in English. A native English speaking teacher will present a fun and active learning environment for you – a perfect chance to have fun, think and learn at the same time.

Hokkaido International School Niseko has created this program for short term summer learners. This educational experience is usually only available to full-time students at international schools. Thus, we are pleased to provide this course for learners who have a keen interest in English whether they have learnt just a little or if they have lived abroad.

Students at Seasonal School will become efficient and productive in independent study through development of executive functions. Students will analyze their learning spaces, create an organized study plan that minimizes distractions, and converse ways to set and reach realistic learning goals. …..

The HIS Seasonal School runs over 4 weeks and each week is an independent learning module. The students will have an immersion experience and learn English communication through speaking and writing English.

Next we are devoted to play. Students can know that the work they have done up to this point will carry over into how they move in any task for the rest of the session without thinking about it. Tasks will include team sports, running, and hiking.

2018 Summer Schedule:

The theme for the summer will be How Learners Learn. Each week will focus on a specific inquiry.

Week 1 July 23 (Mon) to July 27 (Fri)
Week 2 July 30(Mon) to August 3 (Fri)
Week 3 Aug 6 (Mon) to August 10(Fri)
Week 4 August 13 (Mon) to August 17 (Fri)

Rit Zbikowski

Hello there! I am very much looking forward to my second stint at the HIS Niseko Seasonal School, having last helped organise the programme in 2015. Originally from Connecticut in the USA, I have had the privilege of living in Kyoto, Gifu, and Kochi whilst studying Japanese and teaching English to nursery through to middle school pupils. I met my lovely Scottish wife Hazel in Gifu and we now live with our twins Rose and Oscar (age 9) in Edinburgh. I currently coordinate the Science Curriculum and Eco Committee for the Edinburgh Academy Junior School, teaching ages 5-11 and also running a Stage Acting club where we write and produce our own plays. I feel it is important to eat well, stay active and learn to love your surroundings.
I have a passion for conserving our precious environment and have been involved in professional development in the field of Learning for Sustainability, gaining knowledge in how we all play an important role in keeping our world in ecological balance for future generations. In the Seasonal School I hope to instil in the pupils a true appreciation about the Why and How of their world by helping them learn English through experiential, fun-filled science and problem-solving activities.

Hazel Morton

Hi. I was born and raised in bonnie Scotland, where I currently live with my American husband and our twins, Rose and Oscar.
I first came to Japan many years ago to Ena city in Gifu where I worked in a local government education office. During that time I visited many elementary and middle schools to help as an assistant language teacher and to develop materials for language education.
I have a degree in English Literature and Language and a masters in Applied Linguistics. In 2008, I gained a PhD in language technology from The University of Edinburgh. My academic research focuses on speech technology in learning applications. As part of my PhD, I created a computer game for language learners (EFL, Japanese, French and Italian) to practice speaking in the target language with animated characters using speech recognition technology.
I’m excited to be coming back to beautiful Niseko for the HIS Niseko summer school! It’s a lovely part of the world. We had such fun last time with all the students. We can’t wait to come back and be part of it all!
