Head of School
Shoshanah Kaufman Memorial Saturday 25
Friends of the Kaufman family are invited to a time of remembrance and celebration for the life of their beloved daughter and sister, Shoshanah Kaufman.
The memorial will be held in the gym of Hokkaido International School on Saturday, November 25 from 1:00 pm.
In remembrance of Shoshanah, please come dressed in bright and cheerful clothing. Traditional KOTEN / 香典 (gift money) is not required.
The memorial will conclude with a reception in the Multi-purpose Room on the ground floor of the school.
Time Schedule Shift
To bring the school in line with labour law and soon to be adopted Rules of Employment, teacher’s work day will need to shift from the current 8:00 AM to 8:15 AM. The change for this will be from December 1, 2017.
If you could note this change on your calendar and plan to have your child arrive to school between 8:15 ~ 8:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and at 9:15 on Wednesdays, that would be greatly appreciated.
We will make additional announcements through the school’s administrative system, ALMA. We appreciate your understanding as we make changes.
From the Principal’s Office
This year, the Student Council, ACT Club (HIS Community Service Club) and the PTA will again cooperate in organizing the school’s participation in "Project Santa," which is a gift-giving donation drive for Hokkaido orphanages during the holiday season.
We would like to ask the HIS community to support this project by donating gifts, which will be taken to three orphanages in Hokkaido (Hokko Gakuen in Ikutahara near Kitami, Nansoen in Sapporo, and Kousho Gakuen in Sapporo)
Starting on Monday November 20th, students are asked to bring donated gifts to HIS. Please read the following instructions carefully:
Price range of a gift from 1500 yen to 2000 yen
Each student should buy a present for their same gender and age level.
Families with more than one child at HIS are welcome to donate just one gift total if they would prefer
NO CARDS / LETTERS / NAME should be attached to the gift
Please write your age, gender, a simple description of the gift on a “post-it” and attach it to the gift. (ex; “age 7, girl, stuffed animal”)
Please do not write anything directly on the present
Important: Please do not wrap the gifts
All gifts should be store-bought (no used or 100 yen shop items please)
Presents are to be brought to HIS by: Wednesday, December 6th (at the latest)
＊ Elementary Students: Student Council will collect your gifts from your homeroom teacher
＊ Secondary Students: Please deposit gifts in the box found at the library desk
We appreciate your contributions to help us make the holiday season more joyful for others.
Secondary Student Progress
A reminder to secondary parents to please check Alma regularly to see your child’s progress. As you know, the assessment and grading system has changed significantly since last year so that now we have a standards-based grading approach. So far we are very encouraged by the effect this change has had on student motivation and learning. If you have any questions about the changes we have introduced, please feel free to contact me. As well, I hope to present another parent information session on the subject early in the second semester.
Next PTA Steering Committee Meeting is Wednesday, December 6
Next SAT Testing day is Saturday, December 2nd.
Greetings from beautiful Niseko.

The MS boys had a game last week with Shinyo HS and last night with Hachijo JH. Both games were great tests for our team even though we lost both games narrowly. The HS boys and JV boys had narrow wins last week against Keihoku HS. This Wednesday the JV boys will play Seishu HS. We had a great fun day last Sunday at Shinyo HS for a `3 on 3` … many MS, JV and V players attended. There were even 3 pro players who played a scratch game against 2 of our teams. See pics
