Head of School
Parent Teacher Conferences Day
A quick reminder to parents of this short and full week of important things. First, please remember that Wednesday is both a Late Start Day and Parent Teacher Conferences.
Classes will finish at lunchtime (12:10), however, lunch will not be served by the kitchen and students who are not attending conferences are expected to leave campus. Conferences will begin from 13:00.
Conferences are an important chance for teachers and parents to communicate on the progress of your child so that both home and school can work together to ensure the success of each student.
Although HIS does not take the entire week off, the school will be closed on both Thursday and Friday. We hope that you enjoy the long weekend as a family. This is the final breathing spot before the end of the year.
When we return from Golden Week,we will have just six weeks left in the school year.

Parent and Student Surveys
Last week, parent and (secondary) student surveys were sent out to the school community as part of our WASC accreditation process.
Please take a few moments to complete this survey by May 5th 2017.
The accreditation process is a six-year cycle of:
- ensuring clarity on the school's mission and purpose
- gathering of school data,
- clarifying of what all students should know, understand and be able to do,
- analyzing student performance,
- examining the academic, social, personal program of the school
- identifying critical areas for improvement
- creating a school-wide action plan
In the spring of 2017-18, HIS will be visited by a team of educators from WASC who will evaluate how our school is doing in addressing WASC criteria in areas of:
- organization of student learning
- curriculum, instruction and assessment
- support for student personal and academic growth
- resource management and development
Perception (opinion) data is one of the important types of evidence analysed in our report to WASC. Your completion this anonymous survey will therefore be of great help to us. Thank-you!

This will be very helpful to minimise noise and disruption for elementary classes at the end of the school day. Thank-you for your understanding!

Hokkaido University Students visit HIS NIseko
Saturday, HIS Niseko opened it's doors to the graduate students of Hokkaido University. Over 40 students toured the school; then listened to a lecture on admissions, curriculum, students, and teachers. We discussed how our school came to be.
Thank you all. Special thanks to Professors,Masashi Nara, Ph.D. and Tadashi Endo, for an afternoon of learning and fellowship.
Niseko Community and Corporation Scholarship Program Update
HIS Niseko continues the to establish a scholarship program for the Niseko community. This month, we will present to the Executive Board our plans towards opening a scholarship bank account, determining criteria for applying for a scholarship, and forming a scholarship committee to draft documentation (receipts, tax limitations, application, etc.).
It is a long but worthwhile process.
Cheers to our parent community for sending in the supportive testimonials. Each goes a long way in crystallising what we are doing here. Here is one excerpt:
“Our first impression of a friendly school within a welcoming community has proved well-founded. The boys settled quickly into their classes and, as they bonded with their peers, we were afforded a springboard into the larger Niseko community through school activities and friendships.
The class teachers are the school’s greatest asset. They have shown themselves to be compassionate, knowledgeable and flexible in their approaches. Communication between home and school is excellent: with a weekly, illustrated newsletter and informal chats whenever necessary. Discussions are open and timely and parents’ opinions are valued.
A genuine feeling of partnership is generated between staff and families.”
Please keep sending in more testimonials. They are quite helpful.
We gently request donations for the HIS Niseko PTA Annual Spring Bazaar. Items should be new or in good condition. They should be suitable for Spring and Summer. Clothes, toys, books, homewares and sporting goods are welcome.
Please, kindly leave donated items at the back of the stage in the MPR. We appreciate your generosity.
