Wishing the Husky Community a Very Happy Holiday

The end of the calendar year marks many national and international holidays, including Christmas and of course New Years. We would like to wish everyone in the school community the very best of the holiday season and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the year of the dog.

Preparing for the 60th Anniversary

Quite amazingly, HIS is nearing its diamond anniversary. As many will know, HIS was founded as Hokkaido American School in 1958 when the US base, Camp Crawford, closed and with it came the closure of the base school that had been open to non-military expatriate Americans.

As we look forward to the next school year and our opportunity to celebrate 60 wonderful years, we are reaching out to current and past parent and especially alumni who wish to help out with the planning for the 60th year.

If you are interested in supporting HIS for the coming year, please email the head of school at headofschool@his.ac.jp

We look forward to seeing lots of parents there!

  From the Principal’s Office

Welcome Back
Hoping you all had a wonderful and festive winter break and wishing everyone a very happy 2018!

PTA Meeting
Please note that this week’s PTA meeting is rescheduled.
The next PTA meeting will be held Wednesday January 17th at 3:45 in the Teacher’s Room (Room 206).

MAP Testing
Starting on Wednesday January 10th, HIS students in grades 4-11 will be administered standardized external tests called Measures of Academic Progress (MAP).
We give grades 4-11 students MAP tests to determine their instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year (and from year to year) in the areas of Math, Reading, and Language Usage.
MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. With MAP tests, we can administer shorter tests and use less class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about your child’s growth. Over three weeks, your child will spend a total of about 4 hours completing these tests.
Reporting back to you:
Included in your child’s final report card this June, you will receive a report showing your child’s growth over this year. This report will show specific areas of growth, specific needs, and comparative data with peers, US norms, and other International schools.
If you have any questions about these exams, please feel free to contact me.
Also, I encourage you to check out the following website: https://www.nwea.org/assessments/map/

Semester Report Cards
As we approach the end of the semester (January 25th), students should be working hard to complete their final assessments.
Please note the following distribution dates for reports:

  • Elementary: Students will bring home reports on Friday, February 9th
  • Secondary: Reports will be downloadable on Alma as of Wednesday, February 7th

New Year’s Greetings from HIS Niseko.

image5.png

We are excited and grateful to begin 2018 with six new students to our campus. This brings our total to 27 enrolled students.

The Executive Board in Sapporo has agreed to employ me as the school leader for at least two more years. My family’s decision to stay in Hokkaido stems from the untold efforts of many fine people. Our school is a direct result of focused passion, patience, excellence and hard work. I look forward to our student’s continued academic, social and emotional growth.

We honor each day with our students. We look ahead to the coming months as we celebrate Pi Day, Book Week, and Poetry Cafe. We highly anticipate competing in Sports Day as well as singing and dancing during the annual Spring Concert at Kitara.

Finally, we at HIS Niseko especially look forward to growing alongside you. We are here due to your gratitude, commitment, and dedication to the Niseko region. Thank you.

On behalf of my family and all who work and learn at HIS Niseko, may we wish you the happiest of New Year’s greetings.

Sincerely,

Barry Mernin
