School Profile

Hokkaido International School is a private (secular), coeducational day/boarding school offering an American-style education from early years to high school for students of all nationalities. HIS was founded in 1958 and remains the only international and English-medium school on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. The school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS) and the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). Accreditation, Associations & Memberships 

Hokkaido International School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS) and the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). HIS is an International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and an International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) school.

University Partnership Agreement 

Hokkaido University signed a partnership agreement with Sapporo University in the early winter of 2012. The relationship has benefited HIS students by giving them greater access to the facilities of a university, including sport, performance and library facilities, alongside an expansion of learning opportunities. The music program of the university has collaborated with high school band and in the summer there are annual opportunities of HIS students to intern in the university's English summer language program. 

HIS has held music and drama performances at Sapporo University's Prea Hall in 2013~14 school year.

The Community 

Hokkaido International School is located in Sapporo, the prefectural capital of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost major island. A metropolis of 1.9 million, Sapporo is the largest city on the island and the 5th largest city in Japan.
